"What Matters Most Lasts the Longest"
I really cannot believe how fast time flies.  I have been trying to get a post done for more than a week.  Our family has been doing pretty well.  We are just living our own brand of normal and trying to live every moment to the fullest.  That does not mean that we are doing fun, thrilling, entertaining things every moment.  It also doesn’t mean that we are running around filling every second with what ever whim or activity comes to mind.  I think we are trying, sometimes more successfully than others, to make every moment we can fulfilling and meaningful in some way.  An extra long hug, or running back into a room one or two more times for a kiss, reading just one more book or playing one more game with Ammon, an extra couple of scripture verses read as a family, extra moments spent in family prayer, letting the kids stay up just a few minutes more, letting them play night games with the neighbor kids a few minutes later, a late night run to Sonic for a cream slush.  If you take out our vacations our life is really quite simple and may not seem that busy or even exciting.  But I have learned that life can be simple and not too busy and still be amazingly fulfilling and joyful.  I think the secret is enriching your life by spending more time on the best things.  Many of the things that we clutter our lives with, while they are not bad, are also not the best things.  Amber’s illness has given us the unique opportunity to cut out almost everything that is not absolutely essential in our lives.  At first we sorrowed that parts of our lives that we thought made us happy or made us who we are were being lost.  But what we found was that while we miss some of the things we gave up, we were left with what really helped us be our best selves and what was most essential to a happy, fulfilling, existence.  That is faith, love, and a job to pay the bills.  We have learned that what is most important to us is our relationship with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, our relationship with our family, and taking care of our family.  So with our simplified life we enrich our lives by enriching those areas.  We certainly are not perfect at this but as we have gone through the process I described we have become more content and found much joy.  It’s definitely a case of addition by subtraction.

My Sleeping Beauty
Last year we referred to our experiences as the “Year of a Million Dreams”.  Now Amber is literally living that phrase.  A little bitter-sweet poetic justice I guess.  Our wonderful hospice team has told us from the beginning that Amber would sleep more and more as her body progressed through the stages of shutting down.  That has really been the case.  A month ago Amber routinely slept until about noon and now she sleeps well past that.  Her record so far is yesterday when she slept until 4:00PM.  This is not the normal kind of extra sleeping most of us do when we wake up and then pull the covers over our heads and try to sleep and extra twenty minutes or an hour all the while we can hear every bird chirp, neighbor’s lawn mower, etc.  Her sleep is a deep sleep where five kids down stairs playing, watching TV, and sometimes fighting, the a friend cleaning house, her mom coming in for a laundry basket, and the phone ringing does not wake her up.  She does not even move while she sleeps.  Sundays are really difficult for Amber.  She loves to attend church services and really draws great spiritual strength when she attends.  However, our services begin at 9:00AM and it is so difficult for her to force herself out of bed 6+ hours earlier than normal to attend.  She does it anyway though.   She gets up at 8:30AM, gets ready and arrives at church just in time.  She would love to attend Sunday School and Relief Society (a class for women) but she can hardly stay awake during sacrament meeting so she goes home and sleeps for 5-6 hours.  It’s extremely difficult for her to be awake 6-7 hours earlier than normal but she does it anyway.  Now you understand what I mean when I say Amber is literally living the “Year of a Million Dreams”.  We are blessed to have Amber’s mother and my mother up at our house taking care of the kids while I am at work and Amber is sleeping.  We have great children but I know that without our mothers I would never get anything done at work worrying about their well being and if they were allowing Amber to rest.
Suggestion Box
We are in a quandary about what to do next.  For the last few months we have been hoping and praying that Amber would be well enough to do the things we planned for May, June and July.  We were concerned that she would decline too much to do San Diego, Wolf Creek, and Bear Lake.  She has been blessed with slow decline at this point and was able to enjoy all of those vacations plus the last minute cruise we planned a couple of weeks ago.  If you have any simple but enjoyable outing or vacation ideas leave a comment on this post with the details.  It needs to be within 2 hours of home, and not require much physical exertion for Amber or be wheel chair accessible.  If your activity or vacation is selected you will be rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing you helped us live every moment to the fullest.

Note from Amber’s secretary
Amber is still well enough to have visitors.  She enjoys talking and enjoying the company of others.  Because of her extended sleep time, evening visits are best.  Please call me at 435-730-2656 cell to schedule an appointment.
I reserve the right to cancel or end the scheduling of appointments for visits altogether depending on her condition.

Dan- I think about you guys all the time and you are constantly in my heart and prayers. I wanted to make a suggestion to you about a fun place to visit. 2 actually that you probably already know about but have always been fun places for us when we lived in dear Perry.

First, the dinosaur park in Ogden. It is wheel chair accessible and so fun for all the kids.

Second, the Children's museum in Ogden. Fridays they are open later in the evening. And with such a huge variety of activities there should be something for everyone.

And it sounds like you enjoy Sonic as much as we did! Alas there are no Sonics in Alaska.

And I just remembered a great picnic we once had with our neighbors on the lawn of Mantua's City Offices. It was cooler over there later in the evening after the sun went behhind the mountain and they have a playground and it was close enought to the reservoir to go throw rocks too. Which, I have to say, throwing rocks in the water is always a fun thing!

Enjoy!

Hi Dan and Amber. I hit the wrong button (again) not meaning to post yet. I was so glad to see another entry. I watch for one everyday. I understand the sleeping alot, wheelchair accessibility, bathroom needing to be close and easy to get to with a wheelchair and without having to worry about stairs, the heat, the fatigue, and the energy it takes to just put your clothes on to go anywhere, so why not just vacation at home? It was probably 15 years before Grant and I ever went anywhere for our anniversary because he was always working, and even after fifteen years we celebrated over spring break for our anniversary or UEA for my birthday. We usually went to Wendover because back in those days you could get a two for one buffet, CABLE TV !, and a cheap room.(Not anymore!) For years I had to come up with creative ideas on how to celebrate these special occasions. One year I had Jennifer and Russell learn some french words so that they could be a french waiter and waitress. They greated Grant at the door with a french expression, everything on the menu was french foods, we set upa table with our china,(back when we married that's all you registered for only to have it sit in your cupboard). I think the kids had more fun then we did taking the orders, dressing up, etc. Pick a country and have the kids find or draw pictures. Make decorations, costumes and foods from that country and go there at home. Set up a tent in the back yard and have a candlelight dinner then convert it into a campout with the kids. Make smores using a bunson burner, campstove or some other heating device to cook the marshmellows. My dad did construction on the side and at one time had round forms. I used them to make an arena for a bull fight. Years ago in Relief Society they ahd a cultural refinement lesson once a month where we learned about other countries. Everyone came dressed in spanish costumes and watched a bull fight (alias my two younger sisters portraying the bullfighter and the bull), and ate food from Spain. The world is the limit right at home! While the kids are still home this summer.let them do the planning and work. It will give them something to do and keep their energy and thoughts on fun things. We pray for you daily. I truely believe our Father in Heaven has a reason and a purpose for everything, mostly to become more like Him. That you have all done faithfully and beautifully! Thank you for the example. Vickie

HI Amber and Dan, this is Lucy (hollyann) from breastcancer.org.......Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers today and always...I just wanted to give the suggestion of a family outing.....How about a movie all the kids could watch?.....This is wheelchair accessable and would not be hard on Amber if she is still up to it.......Also how about just a stroll around the neighborhood if that is feasible?....I wish you all peace in this difficult time.......
Hugs and love....
Lucy

Amber & Dan ~ As far as family activities, I don't think there's anything as beautiful as a high mountain meadow at this time of year, blanketed with summer wildflowers. I'm wondering if Amber would enjoy an afternoon drive up around Park City. I can't tell you which roads would be most easily accessible for your vehicle, but I'm sure the Park City Visitors Bureau could offer some suggestions -- maybe even an easily reached picnic spot.

You are in my prayers ~

Love your blog postings. Love you guys. You have inspired us to live our lives more fully and to enjoy the most important things. Our recent Yellowstone trip was inspired by you. :)

Scott and I recommend trying the Snowbird Resort. In Little Cottonwood Canyon. It's gorgeous, we saw moose and chipmunks, and it is nestled right in the mountains. There are alpine slides, and a zip line right there. There is a tram ride up to the top of the mountain (you may need to check to see if it is wheelchair accessible.) The different hotels up there have pools and jacuzzis and a steam room, and things like that. So there are fun active things for the kids, and also the tram and just the gorgeous scenery that your kids could do, and the pool for the relax and float time for Amber. We went up just for 1 day and night, and loved it, and it is probably about a 90 minute drive for you.

We sure love you, and we pray for you everyday.

Hi Dan! We would love to take your family on our Polaris Ranger up to Willard Peak. We would borrow a 2nd Ranger from our family to fit everybody. We would start at Dock's Flat. The ride is not terribly bumpy in that machine, and the view is beautiful. It is a lot of fun for families. Call me if you would like to... we're going to Girls Camp this week, but could set it up for next week or whatever works! Love, The Leishmans

The reason on-line retailers lower their louis vuitton handbags cost is as a result of the stiff competition plus the truth that they have lesser overhead expenses to pay for. Bare in mind though that you can find some dangers in on the net shopping that you will have to be cautious about. For one, look for a reputable online shop that sells only the highest quality products.
